Festival vertragen

This sign at the road to Pukkelpop is dutch/flemish and I guess it’s original meaning is “festival taking place” (but I am not 100 % sure, maybe someone can translate it to me). The funny thing is, in german exactly the same words mean something like “to bear/tollerate the festival” or “to get along with the festival / or with someone during the festival”. So I would say it’s a very sensible roadsign in both languages.

This is last image of the Pukkelpop series and finally I also want to say “Ich habe das Festival vertragen”.

By the way: this festival was the first time I used my new and handy Canon S90 compact camera, which even supports full RAW-functionality. I really enjoy working with this gimmick.

This image was also taken during our trip to Southengland. The seagull was sitting on a wall at Brightons promenade and seemed to enjoy posing for my photos.

The English love their weather

English people seem to be tough guys, in particular if it comes to weather. Even a typical british (=cloudy) sky won’t keep ‘em away from spending a day at beach.
By the way: the next day was almost the same weather and the couple was sitting almost one the same spot.

Ferry arriving in Calais at evening

Another picture taken around Calais ferry habour. We took a ferry like this the next day to go to Dover.
It was really impressive to see how many ferries cruise the English Channel. It felt like there were alway 2-3 ferries arriving or leaving the habour at the same time.

We made a one week holiday trip to South England (Kent & Sussex) by car. Therefore we took the ferry from Calais (France) to Dover (England) and stayed for one night in Calais. The town was surprisingly nice and I took the chance to do a few photos.
This photo shows the marina of Calais during ebb. I think it’s fascinating to see this boats aground.

A tower in the spirit of retro-futurism meets an old church in Gronau (Westfalen). I took this one a few weeks ago while visiting the Rock’n’Pop Museum. By the way: German musician Udo Lindenberg was born in this small town on the boarder to the Netherlands (Enschede).

This photo was taken at the beach in Juist. Again I tried some retro / polaroid simulation. It’s a kind of s small personal tribute to the art and work of Stephanie Schneider, which work I really adore (not a 100% copy of the style). Fortunately me and my girl own one of her photos, which hangs right before me while writing this lines and processing my photos – so it’s always one of my great inspirations ;-)

Another photo I took in the fields around Meinborn, Westerwald. The sun was setting and shining through the trees. For the retro-style I tried to simulate a kind of crossprocessing with Lightroom 3.

I tooks this one on a warm summer evening in a field close to the village Meinborn, Kreis Neuwied, where my brother-in-law lives with his family. It’s a great area to take nature photos and one of my favourite places to shoot images. Coming from a metropolis like Cologne it’s always an relaxing & inspiring pleasure to visit this village on the border of the Westerwald.

Bee here today

I got a close up lens as a birthday present last week. It’s a Marumi Achromat +3 and I use it with my Canon 70 – 200 4L. I found it quite difficult to use macro stuff, as you need very good light (or a ringflash) and a almost not moving target.
Today I shoot this bee at my brother-in-laws garden. I was lucky with this one, because the bee was not moving and the natural light was perfect today. I am really happy with the result of this closeup lens, even if it’s not as good as a real macro lens. By the way, the plant the bee is sitting at is a very special one and it is around 30 years old – but I unfortunately forget it’s name.

Floating Geese

I took this photo some weeks ago on the island Juist. It was in the afternoon and the geese where flying in from the sea. There were several groups coming, altogether it were around one hundered geese in 30 minutes. I like this shot, because it looks like a drawing and the geese look like they are floating in the air.

Log of wood

Fascinating structures, like this stack of firewood, look often great in black and white. Therefore I am often searching for this kind of structures when wandering around with my cam.
Generally I am a great fan of black and white photography, as it reduces the image to the essential. You have to focus on the composition of the scene, the light, the shadows and the contrast/tone. I prefer this much to stuff like HDR.
I really admire the work of Ansel Adams and the monumentality he achieved with the equipment of his time. Fortunately I got his book “Landscapes of the American West” as a bithday present this week.
I recommend this book to every HDR-guy ;-)
